Now that you've read the article and see that there are many injustices involved, you may be wondering why I am focusing only on the right to vote. This is because I think it is possible to change this more easily than it will be to decrease the imprisonment of black men. There are some things we could do to change this, too, like repeal the 3 strikes drug law and abandon the distinction between crack cocaine and other forms of cocaine. We could also supervise the representation of defendants better to ensure better defense.

But, for now, can we get a grassroots movement going asking for a repeal of states' rights to permanently take away an offender's right to vote, even after his/her sentence has been served? Does anyone know how to get one of those petitions going?

Stop the new Jim Crow!

First of all, go to http://www.commondreams.org/view/2010/03/08-6 to read the article about the new Jim Crow. Then, help me to end the disenfranchisement of a disproportionate number of black men. In several states of the United States, felons lose their right to vote permanently, not just for the duration of their imprisonment. This is not true in other countries, such as France and Great Britain. This isn't right. Can we put a stop to this? The right to vote should be re-established when a criminal has finished serving his or her sentence. Do you agree?
